What bankers have got to do with people who refuse to take *any* job after X months on unemployment benefits?
Ah - so its a criminal offence not to have a job - Im sure the Liberal Politbureau has noted that - as for the Bankers - well their greed and imcompetence has led to a serious weakening of the Western Ecomomies- have you already forgotten - the massive sums that Governments gave to the bankers in the form of bailouts which has led to the current economic crises - if they hadnt lost their shirts at the Capital Casino then you can bet there would be no need for this draconic action - and make no mistake it is draconic.

This is largely aimed at people working cash in hand and signing on as well.

Under the plan, claimants thought to need "experience of the habits and routines of working life" could be put on 30-hour-a-week placements.

Anyone refusing to take part or failing to turn up on time could have their £65 Jobseekers' Allowance stopped for at least three months.

The Work Activity scheme is said to be designed to flush out claimants who have opted for a life on benefits or are doing undeclared jobs on the side.

Does that sound like it might be a case by case thing?

Why should it be case by case basis? Given the numbers involved that would be absurd.

Not having a job is ok - taking money off people who do in order to keep oneself out of job isn't ok.

Britain's long-term unemployed could be forced to carry out compulsory manual work or risk losing their welfare benefits under plans being put forward by the government, newspapers reported on Sunday.

The U.S.-style scheme would see the long-term jobless ordered to take up four-week placements in order to get them used to having a full-time job.
US style scheme?.... hang on a moment
This is the Tories trying to bring back elements of the old english "poor law" system, as was the norm up until the introduction of the welfare state.

The system dates back to Elizabethan times. Under the poor law system a form of 'poor relief' called indoor relief was granted to the idle poor (able bodied unemployed) who accepted work in designated workhouses around the country. If you didn't accept the work, your other choice was to starve. The system even differentiated between the idle poor, the temporarily unemployed, and the impotent poor (disabled, elderly). The impotent poor received something called outdoor relief which didn't require them to work in workhouses.
