How about a move to Scotland,

    Free prescriptions

    No tuition fees

    Affordable housing

    Great banter

A drink that is so fine you could give the shuttle discovery a jump start

I've travelled a lot, so much so I'm on my 2nd passport as the 1st is all stamped out. And yet nothing can replace the green green grass of home, it's beautiful and yet I'm considering a job in Oz after this German gig...

The point being, sometimes you need to get away to see what your missing otherwise you'll have regret.

If you're going to have regret I suggest 'regret what you haven't done'

Well, son, a funny thing about regret is, that it's always better to regret something that you have done, than to regret something you haven't done.

        Take a look here

Loving it in Melbourne, absolutely no plans to go back. Friend who visited recently is currently applying to come out too. She was devastated on having to go back to the UK.

Know what you mean about never feeling settled.

I sort of emmigrated, left in 94 for Aus (On a one year visa and stayed for 5) and then left because it was too bloody far away from everywhere else and I wanted to see a bit more of the world. Ended up back here for a while after a stint in Amsterdam and the New York, and now just left again (For good this time). I'll head back to aus eventually.

Trust me, you get back here and it's all the same tulipe you left behind the first time round, and while you've grown completely used to the weather in aus by now, you'll be amazed how fcking depressing the weather is back in the UK. Granted somethings are great to experience again when you get back, but they sort of fade after a while.

No right answer, but sometimes you have to leave to appreciate what you've got.

I know this is slightly off topic, and at the same time I have no great desire to defend the man, but I couldn't let these pass without comment.

            (3) hadn't claimed to have abolished the business cycle
            (4) had identified an artifical boom as such
            (1) At 2007 prices the country lost £2Billion by selling, at 2009 prices this was £5Billion. It was a lot of money but considering the country is going to overspend by £180Billion this year it is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

            (2) Britain had the best private pension provision, but who needs private pensions when the state will provide?

            (3) I think Gordon said "No more boom and bust". I think it was Nigel Lawson in the 80s who claimed to have "abolished the business cycle"*. Chancellors eh?

            (4) Again, Lawson was the same in the eighties, it is only the scale that is much bigger this time around.

I won't argue with you on that.

EDIT: * I have done some more digging because my memory believes that Nigel Lawson did make this claim. David Smith the economics writer says specifically that he did not. It is more likely to be my memory that is wrong.

I did 10+ years mostly in Oz with a bit of yoyo-ing and other countries thrown in , it took a few years of indecision but eventually I realised I wasn't going to settle there. I came home properly 7 or 8 years ago and I've never regretted it to be honest. I think a lot depends on what you are coming back to !? I had kept my family and social networks up and running while I was away and walked back into the sort of thing I had missed most in Oz. One of the things that swung it was meeting unsettled Brits much older than me who were now trapped in Oz because of kids and finances and were so obviously homesick. I'm sure others settle quite happily but plenty don't.
