It will make no difference, what are we gonna do? Scan their ids as they land on the beaches? No wait, we'll get the French to scan them before they get on the boats! Only an idiot would think this is going to make even the slightest difference.

I'm willing to be persuaded otherwise but I can't see how ID cards would make any difference.
The kind of firms employing illegals won't give a FF.
Even if they extended the scheme so you needed ID to rent accommodation, I doubt that would catch many out. The sort of landlords renting rooms to illegals are probably just as dodgy as the firms employing them.Comment

The reason being given for the purpose of the ID cards is a crock of tulip.
If free ID cards were issued purely for the purposes of proving who someone is, for all the scenarios where you need an ID*, then I think most people would accept that.
Now, in order to GET an official ID, I can see that you might need to have the right to live and work in the UK and therefore a logical extension of its use would be to provide employers and landlords an easy way to check they are employing / renting to legit people. However, that still won't stop people who don't care about the legality of their employees / tenants, it will most likely mean they just exploit those people even more.
*like: picking up a parcel from the post office, opening a bank account, voting, proving you're old enough to drink / smoke, getting on a domestic flight, etc, etcComment
