    Online Safety Act

In case any of you are unaware, the Online Safety Act comes into force today. You may find some of your favourite websites introduce age verification, or are no longer available in the UK.

There has been uproar among some people (mostly men) saying that it is too broad-reaching, and means they can't join private forums "talking about trains, football, video games or even hamsters". The act was introduced in 2023 under the Conservative government, but because it has taken so long to come into force, many seem to thing it is purely a Labour thing and thus terrible.
It's similar to the European Digital Services Act in some areas, but goes further in others. Many argue that the EU DSA would have been a better policy to adopt and easier for global businesses to implement, but that would have caused even more consternation if we had done that.

So easy to circumvent it hardly seems worth bothering with. Certainly parents should not assume this will prevent their kids accessing porn etc. It's no more effective than the adult content blocking provided by ISPs.

It's no more effective than banning low IQ sockies.

        Bring back hedgerow porn!

Seriously though, if you have children protect them yourself as even if HM Gov were to manage to ban VPN access, kids will always find a way around this kind of ban.

Well, sort of. There's more info about the Act here:
Online Safety Act: explainer - GOV.UK

There are separate deadlines for different risk assessments:
"Duties about illegal content" - deadline was 16th March.
"Duties about content harmful to children" - deadline was 24th July (yesterday).
"Duties for categorised services" - pending.

I started a separate thread about this back in December:

I was worried that if that didn't happen, we'd have some of the old miscreants back here.

I bet downloads of the Tor browser have seen a sudden spike too.
