    AI misnamed?

Can anyone explain how the term AI came into use?
if it's supposed to mean 'Artificial Intelligence' then where exactly is the 'Intelligent' bit?
all I can see are clever predictive algorithms and data crunching engines, but no 'intelligence' per se.
so it's another buzzword bolloks game i suppose?

It's the interface between the data crunching and the outside user that's the main thing. Basically they are trying to pass the Turing test, but AI is a nice user-friendly label for the average user.

We won't get proper sci-fi AI until we get accessible quantum computing. If ever.
    Blog? What blog...?

Same bloke that coined the phrase help desk, later to be called a service desk which rarely provides any useful help or service. HTH

This. Interesting (but not really) anecdote. Over two decades ago CSC tired to do a massive shuffle of titles and I think it was only people with four (or something like that) or more direct reports could have 'Manager' in their title so either get more people or have your job titled changed. Being an American company absolutely everyone had Manager in their title at the time. Cue mass wailings and upset for many months. Mainly people that were changed to 'Lead' or something similar thinking it would affect their salary band or something. Anyway, around the same time they changed the benefits structure where you were given your gross wage and had to 'buy' all your benefits back. They decided to shaft every single person in the company to combat the wailings of a few.. Very effective it was as well.

CSC? - was that the outfit that oulawed beards? I remember they couldn't get mainframe engineers in UK because of that.

The headline-grabbing 'AI' is nothing more than a data scraping and spit it back out with a side order of propaganda exercise.

The clever stuff is more what I'd call machine learning and still isn't intelligent because it requires a human to process the outputs. So, things like new drug formulations, x-ray / MRI scan analysis, air traffic movements, weather stuff, etc are all super cutting edge number crunching and probability machines but they don't provide the insights or intelligence although they are good at spotting anomalies and trends.

Ross Perot of EDS is the beard banner.

"Mr. Perot, you have said that as head of Electronic Data Systems, you did not prohibit employees from wearing beards.

But in fact, in 1983 a federal judge found that Reggie Dallaire, an orthodox Jewish worker at your company, was fired for no other reason than his refusal to shave his beard.

Through 1986, beards, striped shirts and even tasseled loafers were against EDS rules.

How do you reconcile these facts with four earlier statements, and what do such strict rules say about your tolerance of people who dress or look or think differently than You,"
                And stripey shirts.

                And shoes with tassels.
                When the fun stops, STOP.

                  Not entirely bonkers then.

Ai is a very misunderstood term and generally the very essence of Ai is misconceived by the media. It reminds me of the dot com boom when people invested in actual nothingness . The UK has zero chance of investing in data-centre Ai, it will be money lost
