If Jesus were born in the reign of King Herod then he must have been born before 4 BC at the very earliest.

Based on the account of the Star of Bethlehem some scholars have linked the date to astronomical events.

Jesus' birth might be dated to Spring 5 BC to align with the arrival of a comet.

Alternatively, the date could be April 6 BC during a triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.

Most (non-Wailers) were aware that 25th December was chosen about 300 years after his birth, and my memory was that the year was considered to be 6-3BC, either late Spring or early Autumn.

What is rather amusing is the the Wailer-in-chief uses the term "sky fairies".
Whether or not one chooses to have any religious belief, there is evidence outside of biblical texts that a man named Jesus and other members of his family actually did exist at that time.

That's the thing about belief you can chose not to. A gentle poke at the believers (the few that aren't killing each other based on their devout religious beliefs) is a bit of fun in my opinion. As an Atheist then belief in a benevolent God is too ridiculous for me to support! He has killed too many or permitted too many to be killed. The mosquito is a bit of a giveaway.

I do find the timeline interesting. It makes people consider that even Christ's birthday was a falsehood to forward the religion.

I suppose in religion priests exist and can touch you, were I god some mysterious ways would shuffle them off this mortal coil pretty quickly.

It was just an ordinary Jewish name, about as common in Judea as John is common to us.

Once you understand the early Christian church's need to recruit converts (particularly in Northern Europe) you can understand their hijacking of the (very popular) mid-winter festival.

There is also strong evidence to suggest that that figure of Mary has more to do with incorporating other North European customs of a Marie (sp? apologies don't have the time to find links) figure.

Personally, I've always thought of the current festivities as being more akin to that than any sky fairy propaganda.
