As I understand it, there have been 2 (groups of) controversial arrests.

    1. A group of protestors were arrested near Trafalgar Square. I'm not sure whether that's the same group you mentioned.
Met Police arrest anti-monarchy protesters - BBC News
"Matt Turnbull, one of those arrested from Republic, said the straps holding the placards had been "misconstrued" as something that could be used for locking on."
As far as I can tell, they hadn't actually attached themselves to any objects. I don't know whether they were intending to or not.

    2. A group of safety volunteers were arrested for handing out rape alarms, on the basis that these might be used to scare horses.
Women's safety volunteers arrested ahead of Coronation - BBC News
NB This group aren't protesters, and they've been operating for quite a while (not just on the day of the coronation). There are also unfortunate connotations when the Met say that they don't want women to have rape alarms (after one of their officers was convicted of rape and murder last year).

The first group fell foul of a new law that was being rigorously applied. They didn't have to do anything, and didn't in fact, but the problem was that they were going equipped to do it.

The second group is even more silly. they are rightly and properly concerned with protecting vulnerable people in the capital during the late evening and nights, when they are most at risk. Personally I totally fail to equate that laudable aim with handing our rape alarms at ten in the morning when a lot of horses were due to ride past close to a very large audience. YMMV. (And I note the police also charged them with handling stolen goods. Go figure).

Both groups' intentions were possibly totally peaceful and legitimate but it's up to them to demonstrate it in that environment (after all the larger Republican protest group in Trafalgar Square were left alone).

I'm not sure where "ten in the morning" comes from. According to the BBC article that I linked:
"The Met said at about 02:00 BST on Saturday three people were arrested in Soho on suspicion of conspiracy to commit public nuisance."

                      .
The second group work with the local police in Westminster handing out stuff at night like flip flops, vomit bags and rape alarms. Apparently the extra police they drafted in didn't know who they were and so the intelligence they got was clearly incorrect.

In regards to the Republicans -they had spend days liaising with the police so they could hold their peaceful demonstration. The police even arrested the egg throwing guy. He had absolutely nothing on him apart from his wallet as he had been warned by his probation officer his moves were being monitored. They then dearrested him.

This is all easy to find in the media as it is one of the top news items today.

The Met have scored another own goal in getting yet another sector of people in London to not trust them.
