Can't eat tomatoes let them have asparagus

Blame it all one the weather -

While Asda is limiting fruit and veg,

(note the picture is from Sainsburys)

Waitrose has started selling asparagus early

Moral of the story it is not the season for the fruit e.g. raspberries and veg e.g. tomatoes, cucumbers that Asda are limiting but it is the season for asparagus.

When the UA war started and sunflower oil doubled in price, I just suggested to my wife that we get olive oil instead.

Contrary to some of the reaction on social media, Brexit has a minimal role to play in the immediate shortage, according to experts.

For example, the British Growers Association says one of the big issues arising from Brexit for the fresh produce sector - attracting workers from EU countries - has been mitigated by the Seasonal Workers Permit Scheme.

“It is more about being able to get back the investment the growers need to make in planting crops and that's where the system has fallen down rather than Brexit,” he added.

In the winter months the UK imports around 95% of its tomatoes and 90% of its lettuces, most of them from Spain and north Africa, according to trade group the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

But southern Spain has been suffering unusually cold weather and in Morocco crop yields have been affected by floods, while storms have led to ferries being delayed or cancelled.
It led to Morocco barring exports of tomatoes, onions and potatoes to West African countries earlier this month as it tried to protect exports to Europe.

The UK also gets some produce at this time of year from domestic growers and the Netherlands. But farmers in both countries have cut back on their use of greenhouses to grow winter crops due to higher electricity prices.

The National Farmers' Union has called for more support for UK growers, noting the horticulture sector was not included in the government's support scheme for energy intensive industries.

Shelves full of fruit and veg in Ukraine as UK supermarkets ration

              https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-b2287806.html

People living in Europe are sharing pictures of their packed supermarket shelves to lay bare the reality of Britain’s recent food shortages.

Asda announced it will be limiting customers to a maximum of three items such as tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and broccoli in response to the problem.

Aldi confirmed it has also begun rationing fresh produce, a spokesperson.

Meanwhile, Morrisons will also start a ban of more than two items tomorrow, limiting purchases of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and peppers.

Strange, only a problem in the UK that never happened befor Brexit

How does Brexit prevent Tesco buying produce? Load of nonsense.

It doesn't prevent them buying produce in the UK, but this time of the year we are not self sufficient.

It also does not prevent them buying from anywhere around the world, as long as they are able to find suppliers who will supply them at an agreeable price and timeframe.
