Why were the police in England fining people for holding parties and attending them then?Originally posted by d000hg View PostGuidance != laws. It really shows how fundamentally well-behaved the UK population are that we've largely followed all the guidance when it has typically not been law, unlike other nations.
You can't fine people for not obeying guidance.

Ch4 News reported the other day that students at Nottingham Uni received fines for having outdoor parties during lockdown, so it can't have all just been "guidance". Needless to say they are a bit pissed off getting fined for doing the same as what the PM et al were doing at No 10.Originally posted by d000hg View PostGuidance != laws. You've not read the memo. Students who are not at Eton are less likely to have Tory donor parents. Therefore they deserve to be fined, long live the reicht, Tory rule forever, never vote against the Tories (or other parties further to the reicht)Originally posted by DealorNoDeal View Post

I didn't say there were no laws. And of course a lot of police interventions were also shown later to be unlawful/overzealous like when ours closed a footpath to stop people going outside. I said the laws were only a subset of what we were told to do. You're engaging in a reductive argument to suggest that because some activity was unlawful, all of it was.Originally posted by SueEllen View Post

Specifically, laws on public VS private use land were quite different.

People were fined for having 2 people over to their own gardens, which are presumably also private property. I don't believe there was any distinction made in law in that respect.Originally posted by d000hg View Post

People also got moved on by police for sitting on a park bench but you could sit on a bench in your own garden. Surely at certain times what you could do publicly and privately was out of step as things kept changing?Originally posted by mattster View Post

The #10 case is clearly different too because it was a place of work. Boris said he should have told everyone "to go back inside" not "go home". The legality of their case is clearly not erm... clear

The precise legalities of it may be unclear, but people know what happened and that is really at that matters.Originally posted by d000hg View Post
