Covid - actually Boris may emerge as vaguely competent.

sort by deaths per million population and we are 17th behind Belgium, Italy and Poland.

Spain, France, Portugal aren't far behind us.

I was quite worried about the care home and flight arrival idiocy but as the figures show comparable countries are nearly as bad.

Interesting to add the density of the population to this as well as this has to be a factor on ease of transmission etc as well.

We are the 9th most densely populated country in EU with many of the countries on the deaths per million list around us are much less densely populated so that's got to make us look better as well?

Certainly a factor but Germany is quite densely populated as well.

That's really interesting. Given the comments in the Express and BBC HYS stories I always assumed we were a very dense population We'll even believe stuff written on the side of a bus

I follow this page avidly and it has been interesting watch us drop down the order, but I don't think we're going to be overtaken by other major EU nations based on the daily deltas - 6 months based on current stats. Some of the South American nations are likely to and I'm still unsure about the USA. They're getting close but their deaths are steadily dropping.

It is kind of fascinating though, that the USA broadly pooh-poohed restrictions and yet still is behind us. And looking at the list only Italy and Belgium are ahead of the most developed nations... and Italy was the place with people piling up in the streets. We avoided NHS collapse, broadly obeyed restrictions quite well, and still have a terrible toll. We are tremendously lucky the vaccine turned out as it did, dread to think how bad it would look otherwise.

But many of the countries near us on the list are far less affluent and do not have our health/medical/science infrastructure. Poland for instance was a long way behind but then had a dreadful wave and caught up quickly while we were vaccinating.

Nothing to do with Boris but everything to do with having an NHS with the NHS largely doing what's best regardless of stupid comments and directions by politicians. Many other countries have a fragmented health system and some countries require ID and residency to get vaccinated.

We are also testing at a rate of more than double per head than Italy, Spain and France.

Most definitely the vaccine saved us, but we also distributed it far better than most. We are at 55% Europe at 33%. France & Germany 10% behind us.
