Does protection stop after 5 months?

They are still unsure how long it lasts but six months is the conservative estimate. Mrna vaccines may well last longer.

Vaccines were not tested without social distancing with lots of virus circulating.

It's entirely possible that even mRNA miracle turns into mirage.

Long Covid defies understanding as sufferers despair

Doctors fear ‘tens of thousands’ of people could be afflicted by multiple symptoms

""Long Covid has more than 200 symptoms including hallucinations and tremors

Long Covid has more than 200 symptoms including hallucinations, shingles and the loss of bladder control, a study has found.

A team of academics led by University College London gave a questionnaire to more than 3,700 Covid "long haulers" from 56 countries, with 257 questions asking them to list and describe their symptoms.

The results indicate that there are 203 individual symptoms affecting 10 different organ systems. Fatigue was the most common, followed by post-exertional malaise and brain fog.

The complete list includes visual hallucinations, tremors, itchy skin, changes to the menstrual cycle, sexual dysfunction, heart palpitations, bladder control problems, shingles, memory loss, blurred vision, diarrhoea and tinnitus."

BBC News - Covid: Younger adults still at risk of serious organ damage - study
            https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57840825

Younger adults admitted to hospital with Covid are almost as likely to suffer from complications as those over 50 years old, a study has found.

Four in 10 of those between 19 and 49 developed problems with their kidneys, lungs or other organs while treated.
The research looked at 73,197 adults of all ages across 302 UK hospitals in the first wave of Covid in 2020.

"The message is that this is not just a disease of the elderly and frail," said Prof Calum Semple, who led the work.

"The data reinforces the fact that Covid is not flu and we are seeing even young adults coming into hospital suffering significant complications, some of which will require furthering monitoring and potentially further treatment in the future."

            .......

Overall, around half of all adult patients suffered a least one complication during their hospital stay. The most common was a kidney injury, followed by lung and heart damage

The highest rates were in those over 50 years old, with 51% reporting at least one problem. But they were also "very common" in younger age groups. Some 37% of 30 to 39 year olds and 44% of 40 to 49 year olds had at least one complication recorded by nurses and medical students involved in the study.

The public narrative is very much switching to "the young are at risk" but it's important to note this story is talking about what happens once you are admitted to hospital with Covid... the young are very very very unlikely to end up in hospital.

It's interesting when you look at the BBC coverage on the masks issue, I've read "we surveyed people in ..." stories where every single person says they want masks retained in law. Selective reporting in aid of a viewpoint they want to push. Not saying they shouldn't but it is interesting, or at least inneresting.

The mask issue is such a stupid fault line to draw. Outside of, in my view, quite a small number of rather voiciferous (and over represented in the media) opponents, most people simply do not care about having to wear a mask in shops or on public transport.

If it was down to me, I would retain the mask mandate for all businesses that were deemed essential enough to stay open during lockdown, on the basis that these places are important enough that people need to use them, even if they would rather not do so amongst the great unmasked. Let pubs, nightclubs etc do their own thing - nervous people can stay away. I would also let non-essential businesses decide on whether or not they want to mandate masks, and have this backed up by the existing law.

The bottom line is that masks are one of the most effective and low cost interventions that we have, and the current confusion around them post freedom day is going to result in a lot of problems - not least all sorts of conflicts in "mask recommended" areas with people refusing to comply.

I don't think that's true. Ir probably varies enormously depending on your local demographic so we might all see very varied patterns I suppose.

You think it really bothers quite a high percentage of people? What sort of numbers are you talking about?
In my own - admittedly rather limited - circle of acquaintances, everyone I have spoken to wants to continue with the mask mandate.
