By the time debts were paid off, and I had sorted out the ballsup (I know, I shouldn't have trusted them) that my so called accountants had made of my business there wasn't much left.

Hence I finished up on UC. That was for myself, my wife. And when you are used to earning that amount per day, a month with just that is a bit of a shock I can tell you. Because you live to your means don't you?
Ouch that was an imperfect storm, hope you are on the mend and finances are better.

I truly think accountants chartered status should be regulated like IFAs and have an ombudsman it seems you just need to pass your exams and hang a shingle with impunity. Recommending dodgy schemes doesn't affect them.

Back in 2003 my client's client onshored and ~40 of us were out of contract. My contract earnings went from £80K+ to about £12k/year (there was a scarcity of roles with my very specialist skill - I have since learnt to develop general skills in post) it was very hard but I didn't have illness to cope with, my warchest did support us we were very frugal that year but at the end my warchest was good for a few more years. I'm a tight wad!

Universal credit is helping people, I think your situation is too complicated for the administrators to manage.

      They are

All of our chartered accountants are qualified and regulated

If you think all it takes to be a chartered accountant is to pass a few exams, why don't you give it a go? Easy peasy money

They aren't, apparently anyone can present themselves as an accountancy firm. They MAY be chartered and MAY be a member of a professional body.

        unlike an IFA.

You really do talk out of your @rse. Seriously mate, if you don't know what you're talking about, it's probably best to stay quiet.

Accountants don't fall under the Financial Ombudsman in the same way Lawyers or Estate Agents don't.

                  Deflecting again?

Trying to hide your ignorance of why accountants don't fall under the financial ombudsman.

Re justice, the first thing you should do is make sure you're engaging a qualified accountant and not someone claiming to be one. Easy enough to do, you can check with the relevant professional body. Then, if they misbehave (whatever you mean by that), you can take it to the professional body that they are regulated by.

It really is that simple, and I know you need simple

                    * If you mean they give you financial advice that doesn't pan out, then maybe you should have gone to a professional IFA rather than an accountant. Just a thought

Again I know I should have been taking more notice but the mob I was with "forgot" to do my end of year accounts so Companies House got on my case, they were telling HMRC that my wife was taking a wage from the company and I have no idea where they got that from but that meant UC wouldn't give us anything until we proved by means of showing them the bank accounts that this wasn't the case, basically I wasn't able to do my tax return myself because they somehow locked me out of doing that, and consequently my Ltd Co finished up being "Gazetted" because I was too concerned with learning to walk and managing a stoma to spend any time and concentration on it.

I was in a coma for 24 days, it really messes your head up and frankly I wasn't really firing on many cylinders.

All the accountant wanted was their monthly fees...

So. Given they will have "their side" of the argument, where do I go from this? Write it off to a piss poor accountancy practice?
