Shut the fook down everything - 3-4 weeks, there will be plenty of opportunities to try herd idea in autumn/winter, with more equipment and hopefully some anti-virals targeting this virus, ffs - China did it, this can be done

By 'everything' I assume you mean none essentials? We still need shops, hospitals, doctors, district nurse centres, chemists open.

If we shut schools, who will look after the kids? The parents will/may still need to work, so you'll be pushing childcare onto grandparents (you've closed down child-minders don't forget), so now you have the super spreaders spending more time with the most vulnerable.

This self isolation lark isn't going to work either. We always book online shopping via Sainsbury's due to wife being pretty much housebound. I can't leave her very long on her own, and it's a struggle to get her out the house. Tried to book a delivery today, and no slots for 3 weeks. This will force me to take her to the shops tomorrow to get our weekly shopping - putting her at risk, and if we ever get the virus, putting others at risk as we (and I assume many others) won't be able to self isolate.

It's not our government that is putting us at risk, but the selfishness of the british public. Bulk buying, booking multiple delivery slots etc will force the vulnerable into high risk areas. But you know, so long as we stock up on bog rolls, we're all good, right?

If we end up like Italy, we will only have ourselves to blame. Best make sure your will is up to date and start the goodbyes now of your elderly relatives

He also said car and engineering firms should build iCU equipment, marr pointed out it needs 5 nurses per bed + 8 years doctor training

He just looked blank and said they were turning existing operating rooms into icu as the had oxygen into them already

I have bluffed a few contract roles over the years with extra skills but this man is clueless

All non essential - yes, enforced by the Army: we need to reset the clock on it, even if shutdown does not get 100% cases closed. with borders shut it will get us to stage 1 where tracking can still work - much better prepared, big hit to the economy is now inevitable - only way is to deal with this decisively NOW.

China started shutdown end of Jan - Govt had 6 weeks to prepare, or even perish the thought - always have plan for such shutdown if epidemic was put of control? 1 month self isolation with Internet is not the same as without.

After reading further, I've realised that I made a mistake.

After a person notices mild symptoms, they should isolate for seven days. If the symptoms worsen "or continue" after seven days, then they are able to call 111.
This still does not change the fact that many people infected with the virus will only show symptoms for a few days or may be mostly (if not totally) asymptomatic; meaning that many people, after isolating for seven days, will feel well enough to go and mingle with society again, unaware that they are infected with the virus, therefore spreading it further (as these people cannot now be tested).

The government appears literally to simply be delaying the spread (still allowing it to happen), with attempts made to control the peak of the outbreak so that it doesn't occur all at once and overwhelm the NHS. Still working towards the development of herd immunity.

Just been announced in my Canton that all shops are to be closed from Monday, except those selling the three Fs. Food, fuel and ...er... farmaceuticals. All restaurants, gyms, swimming pools, bars, events, theatres, clubs etc. also to be closed/cancelled.

No government does but a virus is a virus so people will get it and some will die but the world will continue. What would you do? I'd prefer that our government looks to minimise the economic damage and put us at the front when things return to normal. It's no good being safe when you've got no income and nothing to eat The press and the whingers need to start being supportive rather than disruptive with their scare mongering It'll be back next year and the year after and following that a new bug will take over
