So far, so good after 10 years of using the stuff never been caught out. I never use open wi-fi but I have used hotel wi-fi but my credit cards alll use some form of trusted payment method, primarily they'll SMS you a code to enter to clear payment.

Three of the banks I bank and banked with in different banking groups kept telling me to download it, it was free and had link to the download site. So I simply stopped using Windows to do my banking on.

Edited to say: Checked the link. There are lots of UK current account providers on the list.

It's all getting a bit confusing and Walter Mitty-ish now, it may or may not have been a cash withdrawal. Maybe with masks.

I installed Trusteer Rapport onto my windows machine, and the next time I restarted it blue-screened on reboot. Had to boot into safe mode before uninstalling.

Trusteer Rapport is supposed to stop this kind of attack. So even if it isn't the best solution, better to have it installed or something similar.

It also gives false positives if you have the same username for online banking as you do on other sites.

The fact is if you don't use Rapport or something similar and you do get hacked, the bank can justifiably say you didn't take sufficient precautions, because an anti-virus checker isn't enough.

It doesn't have to be Rapport, but I don't have any problems with it, and it is free and the bank accepts it.

I don't think the issue was mobile banking but online banking done outside a secure environment under which you hopefully have full control.

I will happily use my banks mobile app on a mobile device not using Wifi as those dns servers are unlikely to be compromised and the odds of anyone creating a fake site that can slurp the details from that app is minimal.

I will use online banking when sat at home in a network I have full control over knowing that the dns servers are google's... When I am doing this I also type in the url myself personally....

Otherwise I just pick up the phone and call them. Its why I use First Direct.

As for RBS / Natwest allowing you to take money out without any physical proof that you are the customer No wonder they are targets 1,2 and 3 nowadays.
