Immigration or humanitarian crisis?

Sure what I'm about to say is politically incorrect but I just don't get it sometimes. Yes, its AWFUL that little children are drowning like this but some thing I just don't get:-

1. Why were these people on boats trying to get to Greece and risking life and limb in this way? Surely, it would be safer to cross from Syria into a neighbouring country like Greece?

2. Is it right that countries like Saudi Arabia have said no way to even 1 refugee? Doesn't seem right that we have to carry the can when there is a closer country which would be more suitable.

3. Why are refugees in Serbia trying to get to Hungary? Why are refugees in France trying to get to the UK? Surely, if you're fleeing danger you're happy when you get somewhere safe?

But, tongue in cheek, I think we know the answers to most of these questions.....

What gets me is the naiveté of one country after another saying "Looking at that nasty country shutting it's borders. We're going to welcome migrants with open arms" followed shortly afterwards by "Oh tulip, a lot of them actually came here and we can't cope - close the gates!" Croatia being the latest example.

This really doesn't help anyone and just leads to people who've already been living on the move for weeks or months at a time to suddenly find themselves being shuffled on again.
