Pretty much... of course for some people that would be largely dictated in material terms, for others the community, for others religious issues, sport, etc.

Of course I'm empathetic. Just because I'm not a lefty liberal doesn't mean I don't care. I don't particularly identify with any party as a whole and I'd imagine many people don't. All have some good ideas, some bad ideas but ultimately the country has to cut its cloth to fit the budget we've got.

I'm more empathetic towards ex-servicemen and pensioners being treated badly by the state and young girls being abused by immigrants than I am towards welcoming other immigrants and paying for them.

The problem is the countries in the region who accept refugees e.g. Jordan, Lebanon are home to Palestinian refugees as well.

The other Arab states - Saudi, Kuwait etc haven't signed up to the UN convention, which explains why few go there and they only accept a few.

Think about it - if you are a refugee you try and get to the nearest country that you think doesn't have a f***ed government. As you don't want that country to turn on you.

Anyway half of Syria's population has fled thanks to it's government and IS.

The Arab countries also seem to be stuck in ancient tribalism. So if you don't belong to the right one you are treated very badly. See how the Palestinians are treated, can't work because nobody will hire them and are constantly told to "go home".

So, is nobody else going to mention the slight change in tack from Germany, from "We're open to all the Syrians you can send us" and "Why are you other countries trying to control your borders?" to "Uh oh, we'd better man the guard posts"?
