It is (or was). That's why so many of them crashed. Lift off in a corner and the tail stepped out; snag is only a genius could get it back before the tree intervened. Opposite lock and boot - the normal reaction - made it worse.

Oh. And have you done this at 100 MPH ?

JC is bound to be a fairly skillful track driver. You can't do thousands of laps on an empty track in hundreds of cars without acquiring a certain level of skill. Especially when you don't own those cars or their clutches, and the Stig works for you. I would be surprised if anyone on this forum has one tenth of his track experience. He does it for a living...

        Yes, actually...

On an airfield, deliberately, not on a track and certainly not on the road, and for a purpose. And I can (or rather could, getting a bit creaky these days) not do it, on the same corner at the same speed. The thing is, if you haven't done it, how do you either how not to do it, or what to do if you do do it.

No, he's a reporter for a living. However, experience does not equal skill. Agreed he's had a lot of track time, but his basic car control isn't that clever - watch him on his road-based tests.

Of course it is. Or not. I may actually have done some serious racing in my youth as well as a few driver training courses. You will never know. WGAS.

I knew a race instructor who told me once that to get a car back from a tank slapper just let go of all the controls. Never had the guts to try it :-o

I had the same advice. His logic was I wasn't good enough to control it properly so far better to do nothing and wait till it all went quiet. Like you, I never actually tried it!

This was Don Palmer...he wasn't saying it was the best way just it usually had better outcomes for an average driver. The guy is a Legend

I could never see the point of them drifting cars around a track, gurning like little kids. No one does it in real life, it doesn't show the how good the car is but it does give Nova driving chavs a lesson in how to wrap their car around a tree though. In fact if you have the right car you can do most of that from a standing start and never reach a high speed but you're going to need new tyres. Much of the show was funny but a lot was pretty pointless as the majority of people are never going to get their hands on around 70% of the cars they showed.
Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.

I'm glad the three amigos Clarkson, May and Hammond have left, the show had become dull and stale and mostly utterly pointless and predictable. It needed a reboot.

However, there's no way in hell I'm going to watch that utter twat Evans on TV, so I won't be watching the new Top Gear.
