Given that they are looking for a bob willing to work at Bob rates (regardless of quality) why are you surprised that they don't talk to expensive (quality) contractors.

Generally agree, but needs must. Succumbed to a second interview for a role last week. Lasted 12 minutes, basically so someone senior could vet me. Fair enough, but would have been better if I they had done it first time around. Total cost / effort on that role to date = 2 days and £280. Outcome awaited.

Agree. Chasing a recent contract I had 1 phone interview and a face to face 1.5 hours away and an online technical test. The face 2 face went so well I thought they would offer next day, they certainly gave that impression. But they re-advertised and the agent eventually admitted they are looking at more CVs. This was before the test. But they didn't reject me, just kept me hanging on. I withdrew my interest.

In hindsight, they are not bad people, just a large, slow, "process driven" (ie. red tape) company. I probably should not have withdrawn interest, it was just getting so annoying. Also the test was full of mistakes - what could I do, tell them their questions were wrong ?

I know what you and GB9 mean. I'd been told I'd be interviewed by two people for about an hour. Only one guy turned up to do the interview and we had a good chat for about 25 - 30 minutes. I later found out they wanted to do a second interview so declined due to a number of factors.

If the rate had of been a lot nearer my normal, I might have gone along with it. But, taking all factors into account I decided not to.

I dont have to take the first contract that comes my way. In fact, Im fortunate in that I can be selective as I have no mortgage around my neck so I just have to laugh a goon like 'mr whippy' and his inane comments.

Ah yes, the old "disappearing interviewer" trick. Not wanting to turn this thread into a moan fest, but it is surprising how often the principle manager or engineer will simply fail to show at interview, usually due to a "training course" or some operational issue. It's a bad sign. The stand-in is never as qualified and the interview achieves less. It is also a bit rude, since have travelled far and spent money to attend. And an inability to keep a basic diary date does not engender confidence. Still, the customer is always right.

At my interview mentioned above, the main man - a Solaris heavyweight - failed to attend because of a "training course" or something. The other chaps were smashing but couldn't test my knowledge.
