It would be nice if adverts for jobs could have a title that reflected the essential skills / experiences e.g. if you want someone to manage a SAP data warehouse and they must have experience of SAP data warehouses, then adjust the title accordingly. Don't call the role a data warehouse project manager and then chuck in the SAP experience required as an afterthought.

These people just dont use common sense.

Have to say that the people I've spoken to at agencies don't have any clue about the technical details regarding the job itself. It is buzz words, reading from a job description and matching the two up. I've only come across a handful of recruiters that honestly know what you're talking about and understand what you can and cannot do.

When you explain it in plain English to them; I can do "X", "Y" and "Z" - it's essentially reading back their own job description since they don't have a clue what needs to be done; that's over to the hiring manager come interview time.

It's frustrating but what can you do - they are sales people. If they understood their market better then the right candidates would apply and thus create commission.

Market has definitely picked up but rates still low and seems to be a lot of permie back-filling.

Seen an ad for a NHS BA at £250 / day. Now, i'm sure someone will do it, but are they going to get VFM or are they peeing my tax up the wall?

they seem to be having difficulty filling a lot of NHS roles at the moment.

It seems someone looked at the IR35 rates and used that as the basis of a set of contracts. To say that they are proving hard to fill at the rates offered would be an understatement.

Im seeing lots of jobs advertised for BA's which would indicate the market in this specialism is bouyant. That doesnt mean the market has definitely picked up though. As for NHS BA's, I've seen many at £150 - 200 a day which is well below sector average.

There are lots of jobs in London and the SE. Im getting calls for jobs in Dublin, Singapore and Hong Kong but they are locations I do not want to do (my choice).

I'd say 2/3rds of the country is pretty stagnant. Jobswerve seems to be showing a significant difference between permie and contract roles advertised with permie being the majority. I'd say many sectors are in a downturn. Yesterday I spoke to an agency and the guy said many of their clients are just not recruiting and those that are, are taking on permies. He said he hadnt seen anything like it in the last 3 or 4 years. Happily, he's putting me forward for a role but the rate is 60 quid down on my usual.

EDIT: Oh and he did say he'd had 60 applications for this role!

This tallies with what I have seen. Quite a lot in Edinburgh but rates not great. Have gone for a few things recently but none at the rate I have been on for most of the past 7 years. And these would be away from home whereas recent roles have been commutable.

Having said that, trying to get a clear spec. and the client not changing the role between submission and interview is proving challenging enough!

The agent didn´t even reply at all for the last role I submitted for, even though I was a pretty good match, though I did ask for a high rate, I was going to call but I couldn´t be bothered, I know they were inundated, I didn´t need to ask.

My strategy is "hang loose", haven´t felt this good in years...and loads of gigs planned (yeah... real rock´n´roll), written a whole load songs over the last few weeks
