I don't know, I don't rely on the market for work - I've already lined up work at the end of this contract.

I personally think these 'How are the market' threads are utter rubbish. You cannot put the entire market covering the entire country and all the specialisms in to one comment. People need to take the time and look at their specialisms and where they want to work in to account before they get anything useful from this type of question. If you are specialised then whatever the general community say it will be wrong.

Try using something like itjobswatch for a rule of thumb. Yes it is only jobs advertised on the boards but can be something useful. For example. PM jobs using the graph before. Every period of Jul to Jan has a downward trend bar one year which has a flat one. Although again too generic to really bet your house on it gives some indication.

Better still camp on the jobs boards and DYOR.

That's spot on. Unless you manage to get sorted whilst in a gig, finding the next one is a full time job in itself if you are serious about it.

Seeing an increased number of 'junior' roles. In my experience that means doing the same as the non-junior version but for much less.

Yes and if you do bother to apply for them, they tell you you're 'over qualified,' 'too senior' or client wouldnt consider you because you'd fook off for a higher paid role when the market picked up!

This is one of the reasons I dont apply for these roles with piss poor rates.

                  Interesting market these days.....it sucks.

I have now been told on more than one occasion that the client prefers someone with more subject matter knowledge, even though they have less of the skills they are advertising for than I do. Not quite sure what to do next, as whilst I am bloomin' good in my subject area, i'm not going to easily develop an in detail knowledge of different businesses subject matter.

                  Hey ho.

I wouldnt worry. I'd read this as code for 'the role doesnt exist.'

Im seeing lots of permie roles being advertised right now. Im wondering whether all this schit about the government and hmrc's attack on 'off payroll' contractors is frightening businesses off taking on contractors.

Either that or some market segments truely are fooked. This has all the hallmarks of a 2001 downturn.

                      Yeah, I remember that one.

You are quite possibly correct in the roles not existing. I just find it strange that any client would go out to market for a skill they lack, yet prefer someone who has the subject matter knowledge they already have in bundles. Yes, its nice to have, but surely the missing skill set comes first?
