As a software developer, engineer I thought they were the same thing.

Just starting using CoPiliot. Not bad from what I can see, however still prefer to handwrite my code. You don't learn anything copying and pasting.

Some people are saying that with more code being written by AI means testers will still be required (for now at least) because the AI generated code is quite bug prone at the moment.

It will takes a few more years. The internet 'came out' in the early to mid 90s but the demand from companies didn't go crazy until 1999 and 2000.

Absolutely. There was a stage where fortunes were invested in startups that didn't really have a credible business plan in place because there was a belief that bricks and mortar was soon to become out of date overnight.

We are still going through the process 25 years later. AI will be the same (not sure if it will take 25 years but definitely over the course of several years).

I also think the environmental impact of AI will become more and more of an issue.

I sure don't. I use it frequently for suggestions and (very) rough first cuts. It's great, very useful but not the whole enchilada.

Still needs developers and testers IMO.

I'm guessing when you started, you were (like me) a Computer Programmer. Perhaps advancing to Systems Analyst, if that was your bent.
Probably if someone called themselves a "Software Engineer" in front of YoungKingBilly you would have had an aneurism.

I'm not.
I wasn't a programmer.
I began as an engineer.

Why would a company need to spend on IT projects now, when their competitors are also standing still.

Not the same in all industries. I work in Logistics and the key spend areas at the moment are Security [no surprise given the news], automation and data [aggregation and AI analysis] with spending consistent across the sector given all companies are at the same game.

With much of the solutions being premised about taking over a customer's supply chain at lower cost and increased efficiency it's no surprise that in times when things are tight there's a market for folks that can save businesses money. Also - just have a look at someone like GXO's spending over the last few years.
