How much lower than the market rate is this?

As has been said, depends on an individuals experience. My concern as rates go down is it becomes unaffordable to "service" the contract anymore.

Cost of travel etc. Just not worth the hassle anymore.

I got a friend contractor for 10+ years. He was struggling to find an outside IR35 contract at a normal for him rate, £600-£650.

His solution, that kind of works, got a couple of perms jobs at the same time, also is looking to take on another inside contract

        He is currently getting:

        - £50K perm
        - £65K perm
        - about to get a £400/day inside

Total would be 50+65+(70?) = 185K/year or eq to £800/day outside IR35! plus you get the 20 days holiday

Obviously this is remote only at the moment, and in a month or two it will require onsite 1-2 days a week.

What do you think about this? Is it sustainable? Is it "legal"?

It's because of people like your friend that employer don't want remote worker!

employers take the piss in many shapes or forms, has 'being professional' and doing your part helped the market in any way? They'll just expect more.

Being less productive also stimulates the economy.

people also tend to blame perm-tractors as well for IR35... market would have been stronger how it was previously. It is only the employers that are benefiting. And it was pushed with intent in that way.

I think he should get a 4th and resign drop the ones that start to have expectations for on-site presence. It will do the market a lot of good.

If the work is 100% off site, cheaper countries are available.

Both permie roles will be on a pay roll... the first role is fine, but the second company will have to know he's already got a job and what he's earning so they can use the correct tax code when he gets paid (D0 I think in this case). Just that alone may raise a few eye brows.

I thought that they already did a good job outsourcing roles. Are you implying that there is even more opportunity there?

You underpay tax and submit a self-assessment at the end of the year. You can afford it with that income now probably get an accountant to do it for you. Previously it would have been 1 month of savings.

Cant see how that is sustainable post lockdown. At least one of those 3 companies is going to want him in back in the office when work from home is no longer the government recommendation. The 1 or 2 days he has been told/promised will turn into 3 or 4.

Probably not sustainable but knowing how companies treat people, good luck to him.
