RBS Bans Contractors From Using Car Park

RBS have just announced that contractors will effectively be banned from using the car park at the Dundas St/Fettes Row site in Edinburgh.

Lorien have been advertising a lot of contracts in the last few weeks so it's something to consider if taking up a post here. Car parking in the surrounding streets will cost around £15 per day and, with a 4 hour maximum stay, you will have to move the car during the day at some point.

On the other hand, it's a pointer to being treated differently from permies from an IR35 point of view.

I had a contract once where contractors weren't allowed in the car park. The nearest was a park and ride 10 miles away. I parked anyway. THUG LIFE!
      Kind Regards,

      Paul

        Is this an IR35 pointer?

Personally I always get my chauffeur to drop me off....

Years ago went for a role with halifax at pudsey. That had a massive car park. At end of the interview I asked about such things as hours and parking. The interviewer said contractors were not allowed to park on site and had to park on some council bomb site a short distance away.

I thanked him for wasting my time. Why's that then, he asked. I said I dont work with clients who make me park off site especially on some rubble heap.

On another tack, I personally dont see a contractor having a different colour id badge or not being able to park on site as IR35 pointers. if they are, they're so weak as to be worth nothing.

Permies and contractors have different security badges. Only the permie ones will work the barrier.

Obviously there can be ways around it, if you give a permie a lift to work you could use his/her badge for example.

If it were me I'd arrange to drive to a permie's house who lived on my way, and car-share in... a few quid a week for petrol.

Or, arrange to collect them in my car if that will mean I can park in the carpark with their pass.

Maybe pointer was the wrong word for me to use but being able to argue that you are treated differently from permies would help in any IR35 investigation in my view.

I dont think it would punch any weight but that's just my opinion.

Have to disagree. I worked at that site for around 2 years in 2004/5 and again in 2011/12. There's plenty of parking and whilst you can't use the permie car park in the shadows of the office, the Civic Hall car park is literally 30 yards from the front of the building. In 2004/5 it wasn't surfaced (not an issue anyhow) but it was in 2011/12. Either way there's plenty of free parking on the streets around the place including the main road 2 mins walk away. It's a strange attitude that you think somebody has been wasting your time just because you can't be 4rsed walking for 60 seconds!
