Given notice while on holidays

Hi all, I've been working under contract, went away on holidays for 3 weeks and while on holidays have been given notice. The notice period is one week.

Do you think I have any grounds to claim for the one weeks notice?

I feel that I have grounds, but since I was on holidays which was clear, I can not work that last week... unless perhaps I'm doing work from my hotel on the laptop...

A holiday that long should be taken between contracts.

I don't blame the client (unless you explained the absence during the interview).

Contractors and freelancers don't have holidays. They just have days they can bill a client/agent for, and days they can't.

So, you book a long holiday a year in advance, and then you find a contract. Do you cancel the holiday, or never book a long way in advance and only plan to book at a higher price when you are between contracts?

I've taken two two week holidays over a summer once - had them booked ages in advance, and ended up taking a month off (two week holiday, three days back at work, two week holiday). Client weren't happy, but they had six month's notice that I was doing it, and needed me there.

I was going to say that... Contractors having 3 week holidays is a bit daft but can't see the IR35 link.

The client is useless if they gave you notice for taking a 3 week holiday AFTER you went on holiday. If that was the real reason couldn't they have said before, when you informed them, (you did inform them didn't you?) "look old chap we think 3 weeks is a bit too much and we need you here can you reduce it to a week please?" Rather than the cowardly middle-manageresque style they executed here.
