Anyway, now that I've got that off my chest I'm sure I'll be pleasant to the next newbie that comes along...

Maybe all questions should have a "I can/cannot take sarcastic answers" as the first line.

If the poster doesn't want an harsh but to the point answer they can request that they get a sugar coated one.

That way people are not offended and the rest of us can ignore them as they are asking for a nice answer.

That's an interesting idea but I don't get why these 'newbie' questions get an answer in the first place from those who are complaining of them being newbie. Surely if the person reading the offending item is so offended they should just ignore it and read the next forum post, rather than waste 5 minutes of their own precious time.

The way I see the forum is this, there are several groups/levels of people using it, the newbies are regularly flamed down and in some cases subjected to borderline personal abuse for asking what they think is a valid question. The reason this comes about is normally because of the fact that the more experienced/regular users live in the belief their time served/social status/experience/participation outranks the person with only double figure posts. We'll in my view everyone is actually on a level playing field here, and people have as much right to ignore a post, than the person does actually posting it.

Sarcasm aside though, people keep saying "yes but use search, yes but read HMRC website, google, cover to cover, etc, etc"... we'll if that's the case then there should 99.9% of the time never be a requirement for ANYONE to ever post anything as the answer is already out there. I'd love to just log on and reply to every single post with "YAWN WHAT A NEWBIE MORON, EVER HEARD OF SEARCHING THE NET?"... just doesn't work does it.

The whole thing seems to have stemmed from the question I raised yesterday regarding whether or not I can pay my pregnant girlfriend SMP out my company. All I wanted was a simple nutshell yes or no, I was never asking 'how do I do it', people recommended I use an accountant, which I took on-board.. the reason that thread went off on a tangent was because I took objection to being told to go search the answer in a less than subtle tone. It wasn't the answer about my question which was the problem, it was the attitude which emanates from certain individuals who clearly cannot function correctly socially in society and sometimes need to be told so. You wouldn't get away with that kind of attitude or behavior in most walks of life, it seems to only be accepted because people are typing anonymously behind a computer screen on the internet. Have a bit of respect for other people, and guess what, that might come back your way too! It might work well in the Army, but that's a different thing altogether and for good reasons.

With all the time you've spent whining about how poorly you've been treated and how you're far too lazy to find out yourself, you could have found out the answer to your question yourself by now.

My 2p. I'm a regularly contributer to two forums in my speciality. One is hosted by the vendor, and the moderators are staff of the vendor. And it's oh so polite. The other is independent of the vendor, and newbies asking questions which are very general or easily answered through google, or requesting copyrighted documentation, or expecting to be spoon fed - unless the moderators get to them first, then they just get told to read the rules and the thread is locked.

The point is that the white noise on the vendor forum is extremely high. That of the independent board is not. The latter has become a much more useful and focussed site. The former is sinking in a morass of its own making.

Sorry, but wrong. The experienced guys around here will always answer questions or aim to explain things when they are asked. What we get a bit scratchy about is when people ask "Tell me everything", as opposed to "Tell me about this bit".

Take your own case, chris79. You've started two threads on here. On one the advice given was "Ask the expert" and your answer was "I think I know better than the expert". The other one was asking for an opinion on the correct application of the rules on tax relief. Guess which one attracted the short answers, which one got a careful and reasoned explanation and which one marked you as someone who doesn't listen.

The first rule of any forum is to read before you post. It's not the regulars asking for the favour, is it?
