I intend to insure it to the hilt using the most expensive example I can find on autotrader plus a bit more so if it does disappear I'll get more for it I guess.

I assume it's cash in bank before you hand the keys over and the like? I won't be accepting cash even though the car is in the low 1000's

Paypal friends and family is what I've used in the past. If you use the official "Payment for goods" version then they have the chance to reverse the transaction by complaining about the car etc and you have very little comeback.

I think there's also no fees with the F&F method compared to the official payment version

When I've taken private cars and bikes for a test ride, I've always just handed over the keys to whatever I'm in before I go.
Some people have asked for cash upfront before a test ride, and I walk away at that point.
