Things to do:
1. Check your company insurance
2. Are the requests coming from the IT department of the client, their HR or their legal team?
3. "Threatening civil proceedings" is a very broad statement. Is that what they have said, or is that your interpretation of it? Have they sent you a legal letter advising you of legal proceedings?
4. Have they asked you to return things and then the matter will be closed, or have they asked you to provide evidence to back up their claim?
5. Don't delete anything (whether you think it is relevant or not) until you get legal advice.
6. Seek legal advice, do not post on public forums.
7. Search on The Law Society to find a registered solicitor who can help you. Alternatively, speak to your own solicitor that you would have used when buying a house and ask them for a recommendation. The government produces guideline fees, which currently range from £111 to £409 depending on the grade and location.
8. When searching for a solicitor, do NOT choose ones that advertise about accident claims, or that are "no win no fee". You want good advice and you don't want to go to court, so it's going to cost.

Not quite. They may want to see the files to confirm they are there prior to destroying the laptop. See the guardian and mi5 / wikileaks for why some people do things that way

OP - Why'd you want the files in the first place if you don't mind me asking?
Where they anything sensitive or not?

Also, did you email it to yourself using clients own email system? Bad move. Guessing if you'd used hotmail or something no-one would be any the wiser.

What industry is this? It might matter.

Also, are they threatening or have they just noticed. They might be just miffed and an apology and delete might do it.

I'm not a lawyer. Everyone who has offered you advice on here has told you to get legal advice.
We do not know exactly what they have sent you, how it is worded, who it has come from, etc.
Take legal advice before responding to them, and no, do not send them an email saying you are getting legal advice.
Speak to a solicitor first. Tell them the whole story, then take their advice on what to do next.
