Wondered if there is summit else running that is interfering with it. Have to keep an eye out. Play with VLC but tried Media Player, Audacity and PotPlayer. All same problem.

As said previously, did the spadgrowler etc and all working at mo. Cheers!

Next time it starts happening, might be worth trying an online wav player. This may rule out more of the software on the PC.

Found this through google but haven't tried it, and can't vouch for it.

Ordinarily I'd suspect a sound card sw/hw issue but you say it doesn't happen with mp3, so who knows.

Ta woody. Give it a try if it happens again just to see. All working fine at mo.

Bum. Almost inaudible again. Won't play at all in that online player, although a wav converted from a youtube video does. Not done anything today apart from check emails, Excel and bit of online farting about.

Not something stupid like antivirus / security on-access scanning causing an issue is it? If a Windows box might be worth shutting down AV services when you get the issue and retry?

Cheers. Tried troubleshooter. Not sure an antivirus would cause very low sound, would prevent playing altogether. Nothing showing in the threat lists.

PS Maybe it's my swearing that's triggering it.

PPS Gordoneo Bennuto! Not sure what I've done but now they play as a loud buzz. I give up! Ta all for ideas.

                  That may be telling.

Perhaps, as someone suggested earlier, it is something specific about those VR wav files which is causing the problem.

I presume other wav files don't affect your PC?

Must be summit about the format, but no idea what. Far too many of them to go through conversions even if I knew what to do.

IIRC WAV files aren't compressed, it's just straightforward binary stuff as evidenced by my dumb as a box of frogs wav player thingie of yore that just read the numbers out of EPROM & stuck them in a D2A converter at 44kHz.

Goodness knows what Windows does with it.
                      When the fun stops, STOP.
