New desktop PC for home ~£500 ?

    Hi all

I'm on the lookout for a new PC mainly for the Mrs and kids to use for surfing, homework etc, i.e. nothing too strenuous like gaming.

Basic requirements are Windows, ultra-quiet PSU, SSD bootup and separate 1Gb+ data drive. Monitor I'll buy separately. I don't really care what else so long as the PC is quick.

This is the "second" desktop in the household hence the lower requirements and budget.

If you're aware of any deals please let me know.

    Cheers!

Spec your own at PC Specialist and see how it compares to anything available elsewhere.

My last three desktops have been Dells. Base spec plus you can add higher end items in easily as you build your quote. Each one has lasted me without a single fault for many years with the only real reason for upgrades being games so I'd have skipped an upgrad or two with your requirements.

Are you sure a laptop wouldn't be a good option for a 2nd PC? Other than a 2nd drive it seems to tick the boxes and you can always get an external drive or even use an SD card. And of course, easy to connect to a larger monitor and a mouse for longer periods of work.

You say it should be quick which seems unnecessary for your uses, unless you simply mean it should be smooth and quick for those uses?

I have a laptop that cost £500 a couple of years ago and has a touch-screen which detaches as a tablet, which surely added some cost. So I reckon for £500 you can get something pretty decent right now?

You'll get a better spec desktop for £500 than you will a laptop.

                £1,019. Way way too pricey!

Laptop was considered but realistically need desktop for family to use. Laptop will also be bought in addition at some point.
