That's the one I bought, it arrived promptly and contains everything you need. The case isn't the most convenient to use, especially if you find yourself needing access to the expansion ports a lot, and the hdmi cable is very stiff, so your Pi tends to stay wherever the end of the cable is, rather than where you want to put it.

if it becomes clutter you would probably get as much back on ebay.

the starter kits seem to be a way to up the profit margin, like the rainbow case though.

Fair enoughski (I'm not an ebay user, so I didn't think of that...)

I guess I could deconstruct the starter kit - is RS Components a good place to buy the bits? (I'm not after the cheapest).

We have two - one each for the children so they can both do similar things at the same time.

They do some Minecraft stuff, program in Scratch, built Pong in something else...

AS someone who enjoys coding for its own sake I love the idea, but as someone who spends nearly all his time sitting at a proper PC it feels a bit artificial to buy another computer. Plus I have a whole stack of hobby projects I want to work on for PC/iPad already, without introducing something else

I was toying with the idea of this in Maplins a few days ago. I am not sure Mrs Admin would have thanked me for buying one "for the children" though, they are nine and six and I think it is not a bad time to get them into it.

cojak - PVR personally I would go a bit pokier than a PI. Yes you can run XBMC on it but if you are recording as well I would have thought you would need something a bit beefier.

I am just getting a few of my old PCs together, new mobo, processor and RAM and will then whack a load of old drives in it so I can get a Plex and FreeNAS box up and running over Xmas.

9 is definitely old enough to get into some simple coding, if they show aptitude (and more importantly enjoyment) of maths, puzzles, etc. 6... maybe, maybe not. I started VERY young, around that age but it was very simple stuff. I had just started doing guitar lessons and my dad showed me how I could make GWBASIC play a musical note. So I wrote 'programs' which encoded various carols from a recorder carol book, and he put them on his work PCs.

I think the ones for sale in Maplins are an old version - the model B+ has recently come out, it's got more USB ports, more GPIO ports, uses micro SD instead of SD and a few other tweaks here and there. So if you do get one from Maplins check which version it is first, I've already bought some accessories accidentally for the B instead of the B+

Ah, thanks for that Admin. It was just a thought - the Pi is the object of my desire, the PVR was just a possible use.

I think I'll just buy it and figure out what to do with it later.

its better as a client than a server (not quite enough grunt). Hence squeezebox slave & XBMC client.
