The Jam, December 7th 1977 Top Rank in Brighton. Best Gig I've ever been to. They were blinding in a small venue. Saw them twice more at the Brighton Centre, atmosphere was distinctly lacking after the Top Rank. Can't believe it will be the 40th Anniversary of that Gig next year.

The Charlatans in Manchester must of been 1991 or 1992, the time of Afflecks Palace and 25inch bottoms on your Joe Bloggs Jeans.

Slade at Southampton Gaumont in 1974. I was 11, it was my birthday present and it was brilliant.

If you exclude being taken by my parents to see Cliff Richard (my sister was a big fan), the first one was Gary Moore, I think

I was looking after the bar to be fair, gig was in the canteen (refrectory)...

First 'big' gig was Rush I think, went deaf in one ear.

Also had a ticket for Kate Bush Liverpool Tour of Life but my mum wouldn't let me go cos I had no guaranteed journey home. My biggest regret, not long after that I was kipping in Stevenson Square over night after gigs in Manchester, U2, SLF, REM, early eighties, never got bummed...

Girl I knew who went to Manchester Uni claimed that she was in a club one night & MH sent his minder over to let her know he wanted to sleep with her. She turned him down & he was not happy.

I'm prepared to give old Mick the benefit of the doubt on that one as I've heard a variation of the same story from someone else so I suspect it's a bit of an urban myth.

Anyhow, whatever. I've just realised that I saw Earth, Wind and Fire in Pistoia around 1984 so that was my first big gig.

    They were pretty groovy too
