It's not about trust, but about volume of traffic and cost.
If DFDS are struggling to cope with all their own customers, then they will now want to take on others.

but I suspect the trust is gone.

Quid pro quo works for a couple of days if you are down a ship. It doesn't work when your entire fleet is unable to sail.
