I think the Yanks are far too sentimental. They should have cleared the whole area and rebuilt the Twin Towers, exactly how they were before except with thicker (Titanium? ) beams and maybe reinforced lift shafts.

I suppose the snag is it might have been hard to find tenants to rent space in the new buildings.

I got to go up the South tower back in '98 when coaching soccer in the US, however I didn't have much memories from it (maybe as I got to go up the Empire State twice, so they seemed more vivid).

It wasn't until I was on honeymoon in 2007 (on the actual 9/11 date) that I saw the golden sphere from the WTC plaza, that had been moved to Battery park, that I remembered it back then shining in the sun, then I saw it all burnt and battered with firefighter boots at the front of it. One thing brought it all back. Strange how the mind works.

Exactly the same here. It's crazy. None of the coverage gives you any idea of the size of these two buildings unless you've been. It just looks like a grey block as it's so big so the sense of scale is very difficult to grasp without actually going up it.
