    The deaths of people like Bowie and Prince are newsworthy, and British icons like Wood, Corbett and Rickman would always be reported unless there was a massive story.

    We're just reaching the point where the first generation of very well known people are getting to the age they start dying early-ish.

    24 hour news probably has a lot to do with it as well. The broadcasters need to fill the airtime up with something, so they will report the deaths of people who in the past would have been totally beneath the radar. Add in that we seem to have a lot of "burying bad news" (is there still a war in Syria? What about that Ukraine crisis that was going on last year?)

    So, what's the reason for all the deaths?

    The theory that there are just more celebrities – per 1,000 head of population – combined with the fact that many had a terribly unhealthy lifestyle is the most compelling reason why so many have died in recent months. This will be of no comfort to their millions of fans.
