Does anyone on this thread do "Embedded Software", Firmware, Electronics or the like? how is the market, relatively?

There is quite a lot of defense spending going on right now so if you can get security clearance you might actually have a better chance than most since those kind of projects often involve more than just software.

I've been voluntarily benched for a couple of years. Before that I was picking up ad-hoc work from previous clients. 10-15 yrs ago I was getting on average a call per day. Ignoring these not updating my CV for so long the phone has slowly gone silent (except for the damn spam!).

Tbh, I'm dreading interviews again and this probably has a lot to do with it.

My cousin contracts in this market, but in Ottawa.
Fascinating work, but very insular as far as I understand.
He's never out of work, but there are only a few dozen that do it in that market. Mainly the defense industry.
They get their work through word of mouth.

Avonleigh listed the job boards, but calling up your old colleagues and clients and rebuilding your network is what I would do.

I don't do any of those area's. But best websites are jobserve, jobsite and linkedin IMO. There are others like cvlibrary, cwjobs etc

On the WFH debate, can't stand it myself.

I had a fully remote contract back around 2010, first infant son just born, so no way would I get anything done at home. Borrowed an empty flat from someone who was abroad and kept an eye on it for them whilst using it as my office. Then rented a terrible little office space with no windows and suffered that for a while. Finally bought a decent office/workshop through the Ltd. Was going to rent most of it out to cover costs, but the mortgage was never that much, so I have not bothered yet.

The important thing for me is to get out of the house! I would like to find a contract where I go on-site a few days a week also, I do like to meet the people I work with. Maybe don't want to sit next to them and their annoying habits all day every day like the in the bad old days - but I think face time really helps.

I understand that for many people (particularly introverted dorks like us) work might be the prime (or only) opportunity to get out of the house and socialise.

But does no one else have clubs, choirs, temple/church/mosque, gigs, band practice, industry events, football matches, five a side in the park, poker games, house parties, pubs etc..?

I value my work colleagues greatly, but I don't expect them to fulfill the bulk of my social network.

Horses for courses, but I greatly prefer how the industry has shaken out (in the WFH regard).
