Yeah it's like what did the agency expect? That since an offer was on the table I'd be willing to take a 25k cut?
One thing they surely didn't expect was for me to write to the client directly and for the whole thing to backfire as it did....

Maybe they want you to do one because they're planning to either renew your contract or offer you a permanent role?
Although the fact that your line manager thinks it's absurd makes me think they're not planning on extending your contract....

Exactly. The hiring manager said they were going to offer X and the agent said sure, the candidate is happy with X without ever telling me about it....

This has gotten so good and entertaining.
I did what I said I would: I sent an email directly to the hiring managers I interviewed with thanking them for their time and explaining I had to reject the offer because the offered salary was 25k lower than what the agency said was agreed. I...

Slippery permie agent behaviour: 2 in 1 day, same tactic.
So I'm looking for a permie role, I get put through for the role at an agreed salary. I don't want to waste my time so I say "this is my salary expectation, please confirm with the client that they can meet my expectations"....

Had a contract at rbs a couple of years ago. On week 1 I learned I was guy number 3; 2 other guys had left in the previous 6 months, the last one apparently had a rage outburst during a meeting, handed in his notice and proceeded to delete a fair chunk of his work. So, the OP comes in and say they wouldn't mind spending 3-6 months abroad while working their UK contract.
Suggesting the purchase of a 500k house to get residency is quite extreme and I'd say irrelevant to this thread given the OP's original requirements.
Anyways, with...

True. I always ask to the agent how many interview stages there are before I agree to have my cv sent over. For contract roles, I say no to any roles where the process is more than 1 interview. For permanent roles, I say not to any roles where the process is more than 2 interviews....

So you want to work your UK contract while being based in EU.
Ask your client because you may not even be allowed to do that. Some industries require you to be physically based in the UK....

In general my alarm starts ringing whenever the interviewer uses words such as:
- holistic approach
- jazzy atmosphere
- flat structure
to describe the company. I hear those words and I'm already out.

Slippery candidate behaviour, finally.
An agent gets in touch with me today wanting to discuss a role. In ask who the client is. Agent tells me. I find the role on the client's website and apply direct.
