Although no malice intended, I think that are plenty of contractors out there arrogant enough to believe it's because they're so superior. If you can max out pension contributions, especially with carry forward, you can mitigate the worst of it.
However, once you've maxed it out, you really have to think about whether the rate is worth it.
£900 umbrella was and is a good rate, even now, unless you're very niche...

As a positive spin on this. Around mid 2021 I was contacted by a previous client about a potential role and then nothing happened for a couple of months. Fast forward to early 2022 and meetings were scheduled and re-scheduled, similar to what you're saying. Eventually we sorted a contract out months...
