Some of it comes from getting class 2 NI payments from abroad, in return for a full UK pension. Without having to return to the UK.

Twenty or so years ago! :-o notice periods were hard for employers in the UK to enforce. They couldn't require you to turn up to work due to anti-slavery laws. If you didn't turn up, all they could do is not pay you. As soon as they don't pay you, the employment is over. They could sue you for breach...

Strictly, almost any work you perform while in the UK is taxable in the UK - though in practice, no one cares for short term working. Tax residency only means you're taxed on your worldwide income in the UK. The test for whether someone is tax resident is rather more complicated than 183 days.

The difference between owning a house and other investments is that if it all goes horribly wrong, you still own the house. Mortgages notwithstanding...
It's nice seeing a healthy share portfolio, but you've got to spend it some time....
