Tea: ribeye steak with chips, fried onions, and beans

Accompanied by a bit of a recent Trucking Hell featuring a Greggs lorry stuck on the moors. I wonder how big Greggs's contribution to the economy of the northeast is? Got to be around 85-90%

Tonight's major motion picture premiere was Snakes on a Plane (2006) in which (spoiler alert) there are snakes, and they're on a plane!

I couldn't believe this is nineteen years old! All the brouhaha I remember about it on the Internet when it came out must have been on blogs that I had in my RSS feed reader, because Twitter didn't even exist then and Facebook had only just opened up to non-US-students (and I never used it much even when it did). But there it is, nineteen years old

Anyway, it's great. Ludicrous, but excellently so

And then, as it's that day, a rewatch of Independence Day (1996) which is also great. I would like to see a remake in which Trump gets captured by the aliens and is "probed" extensively and in depth, but this version will do for now

      Goodnight all

          Morning.

          Saturday.

          Wet.

          Grey

          Sunless.

Cool in here at 20.7 deg, 22 in the kitchen, 20 in the leanto, 17 outside.

1010 mBar, 29.82528 in Hg, 757.56 Torr, 14.65 psi, (down from 1015 last night), 66% RH (Lidl electric).

Meanwhile on the 29th of January 2020 it was suggested that WTFH take the dog for a long walk, BR14 wanted his very own A10, and LM found him one on ebay, whereas NF remembered back in the 80s A10 pilots using the road signs as targets pretending they were tanks, and BR14's partner's addled parent was out of hospital again. .

Lunch: brunch. Entertainment: Moneybox The Runciman thing about the 1945 election.

Celebrated the rain by running the vac over the house. Knackered again now.

Counted 21 jackdaws on the lawn. Plus one pigeon.

Tea: soup etc. plus a couple of frankfurters.

          Entertainment: PM.

Maigret: the one in English from 1962.

Massive Engineering Mistakes. More examples of How Not To Build Stuff if you Don't Want It To Fall Down. S6E2: Aricebo Dish, Puerto Rico: August 10th 2020: zinc creep in the terminal cable brooms. Ooops. Baileys Crossroads, Virginia: Skyline apartment block: removal of the shoring between the upper stories caused punchthrough of the columns and pancake failure. 14 killed. It wasn't the crane's fault. Lyneham, Wilts, B4069 road: land slip due to storm Eunis. Brunswich Georgia: lifting bridge struck by 11,000 ton ship knocking out 3 sections, killing 10.

S6E3: NY NY: Climbing tower crane collapse during a jump: the jib landed on the "FUBAR" bar on St Patrick's day. It was called the FUBAR bar and it was completely FUBARed after that happened: the brownstone wasn't there any more: the chap inside survived. Pittsburgh Pennsylvania: cantilever bridge caught fire during renovations causing an element to bend: they unbent it with a big feckoff hydraulic ram & heat. It was about 5 minutes away from total collapse. Teton Dam, Idaho: "zone" built earth dam in a canyon with cracked volcanic walls: filled very quickly due to snow melt, promptly leaked through the cracks & duly failed killing 11. Wasn't replaced. Madrid, Spain: cornice of a cut & cover tunnel with a park on top: cornice falls off due to plant roots. Tunnel otherwise ok, cornice replaced with something that's a bit better supported.

My Mum has been phoning her siblings to complain about my brother living in the attic again. She remembers very little but has fixated on my brother and sister in law separating, which is rather odd.

                  Afternoon denizens

Today brings patchy cloud, though more cloud than patch, and it's pretty windy too. Not as hot, being 21°C and not expected to get beyond 22°. The barometers are heading back down at 1000/1008mB

Off to pick up ll2 soon. Odd dream last night, lot of us working for Henry VIII, forget exactly what, involved bits of wood.

Slightly less cloudy out now, still with a refreshing breeze
