Also you are right, we have so many specialised shops (Indian, Thai, Korean, Brazilian, Italian) around here that I take it for granted I can just about buy anything like fresh tamarind, fresh curry and lime leaves, spices, ginseng. At these places you can buy large bags of spices at a fraction of the supermarket cost.
Thai, indian and chinese no probs here, after all the Dutch were major spice importers (Dutch east India company).
I'm talking about simple stuff like baking powder, vanilla extract and celery salt.

As for major cheffiness, not so, vanilla extract consists of vanilla pods and vodka, leave 5 weeks and yer done (better after 5 months though.
Bacon, take a piece of belly apply 30g salt per kilo and stick in the fridge for a week.

Cloggy bureaucratic nonsense from former pimp, am getting really fed up with these feckers as they've cost me a lot of money in accountants fees ( over here you pay by the hour and not a monthly fee).

                    Great article eek - thanks!

After a divorce in his 40s, Robert Glover, a psychotherapist in Bellevue, Wash., realized that his roster of friends had quietly atrophied for years as he focused on career and family. “All of a sudden, with your wife out of the picture, you realize you’re lonely,” said Dr. Glover, now 56. “I’d go to salsa lessons. Instead of trying to pick up the women, I’d introduce myself to the men: ‘Hey, let’s go get a drink.’ ”
I can totally relate to that.

It's very difficult to make new friends nowadays and I hate the old "forcing singles together/social groups/sports club" stuff. The only advantage nowadays is that I am not chronically shy, quite the opposite in fact which often makes me appear a little strange when I strike up conversations with strangers.

Oh wow, didn't realise it was that easy. Mind you, vanilla extract would be hard to make in my household - spare bottles of vodka tend to "evaporate" quite quickly around here!
