Stuart Hall got the maximum according to the sentencing guidelines that were in place at the time the offences were committed. The judge explained this, and would have given him a longer sentence if it had been possible. So the comparison cannot really be made.

He was tried under different laws. And is also in his 80s, which probably would be a factor both due to being old and feeble, and no longer being a danger.

He might even die in prison, so it could be a life sentence.

A sentence should be largely related to the harm it causes the victim in my view and this one is too high.

While it is important to "send a message" to teachers and others who are in charge of children this offence, an affair involving a slightly underage girl who was totally willing and may even have been the main driver, does not bear comparison with some recent cases of grooming and rape of vulnerable and often much younger girls we have seen recently.

We choose to set a rather high age of adulthood by international standards, not all "children" are children in any real sense, either physically or emotionally.

It would be simpler if the law was simply that a teacher couldn't have a relationship with a student at their school, totally regardless of age.

Indeed, although I presume any teacher that does will get fired. Can't be *rsed to look up the exact rules/law at present.

I think that's been the case for a long time. I remember a <redacted> teacher at 'my' school in <redacted> who shacked up with a former pupil just months after she'd left the school's six-form.

There was no evidence of 'activities' prior to her leaving no it was a case of 'no foul'. Bit odd though. And creepy.

Sexual Offences Act 2003 in England and Wales according to this.
