And I've worked all over the world. Loved that bit.

First and last one in the family to go to uni.

I could not have achieved this without my top end uni education in Britain.

I have also taken a little bit of talent and gone as far as I could with it by working very hard. Grads today just want to write websites, no discipline, closed minds, no gratitude. I try not to mentor anymore if I can avoid it

I've moved all round the world for work though, and think everyone should if they can. The amount of people with families who cite kids as a reason they can't - yet when you work around you find that everyone has kids and the kids actually seem to benefit from the experiences (those that I've met anyway).
We resettled in Switzerland ten years ago. We put the kids in local schools, and they're doing fine. (My son currently an undergraduate in Physics, at the University of Basel). And they've all learned to ski really well. I've no regrets leaving the UK, and no intention of returning on a permanent basis.

Like all low cost countries they have many absolute geniuses who are known on the international stage because that is where they figured out they can make money.

It's going to be like the noughties again without the Delhi belly, best shoring until the wages are too high.

Old thread, but I thought I'd add my own perspective, beeing that I started at Ocado in Krakow last month.

The wage you mentioned here is indeed around the average monthly wage in PL, but it's the *average* - IT in Krakow is a different animal. Yearly salary for a senior dev is around £27k (I am converting to £ for easier comparison). That's what you see when looking at your contract. The employee gets around £19k into his pocket after taxes and stuff, and the actual cost for the employer is around £32k after adding some mandatory insurance, etc.

This is not including any additional benefits that the employer may add, like private healthcare, gym, life insurance, which is almost a must if you want to have any good candidates. Paid vacation is guaranteed to be 26 days and the employer pays 80% of your salary for the first month of your sick leave - by law.

So here, you can compare it yourself.

The recruitment process at Ocado was quite difficult - I know many of my friends, pretty decent programmers, who failed it. The only more difficult process I've been through was Google Krakow.

                So half price then.

well done on getting the job! Its not personal - honest .but I wish companies didn't lie about their motives to short change UK workers.

Over 100 comments already accusing them of the real reason - graduates being cheaper over there
Being cheaper elsewhere and not being enough here and are not unrelated. Lower pay due to outsourcing=less reason for people here to enter IT=more shortages=more need for outsourcing.

We have some really good IT graduates (or at least we used to have them in olden days ). Still it is unfair on UK grads. And why they cannot be honest about their real reason?
                      boycott Ocado!
If UKIP are the answer, then it must have been a very stupid question.
