I welcome the idea of renewable energy. The clue's in the name... non-renewable resources are finite and we need them for making bendy phones and T-shirts you can download new pictures onto.

A serious question for the skeptics, if we forget AGW what are your thoughts on use/depletion of fossil fuels? Are you skeptical of everything remotely green, in other words... 'green' and AGW are not synonyms after all. Do you think oil/coal reserves are orders of magnitude larger than claimed and that's another scam?

For my part, I believe we should be exploring, far more rigorously than we are, alternative fuel sources. Purely based on the obvious fact that existing ones are pretty much finite and will eventually run out. Not before they become prohibitively expensive though.
I have little doubt that cars could be powered by alternative combustion methods involving water for example, provided sufficient resources were put into the development.
Until Governments are moved to force drastic action upon us however, they will simply look upon the whole green lobby as a means of leveraging taxes out of the populace, and we will drift along as we are now.
The required changes will probably not happen in our lifetime.

There are to many humans. We are like a plague across the planet, using it's resources, breeding, spreading filth, war and poverty. Less humans, less problems.

Is it the same as this one:
That would be correct. The IPCC draws its expertise from the world's experts in their field, that field being climate science, and the related disciplines of energy production and economics. The segment of the most recent IPCC Assessment report on 'The Physical Basis', for example, was the work of over 700 researchers, every last one a published and practising climate scientist.

By contrast we have The Register, a periodical dedicated to news and gossip from the IT industry. Few who have experienced it will ever forget it's hilarious series of photographs featuring posed Playmobil figures

And here we have pearls of wisdom from Lewis Page. His expertise and experience lie in making sport with the occasional absurdities thrown up by the military procurement process. Who better to analyse the nuances of the climate change debate?

Freelancing at the Reg has turned into a full-time staff job, which means my nippers can have shoes (you wouldn't believe the number of shoes they need*). Fortunately, the madness of military kit often crosses over into techno-news, and the cheery Reg style and probable readership of cynical, beer-swilling scifi-fans and IT types suits me very well. A fringe benefit may be that the world will be spared my planned series of 800-page science fiction/special-forces operas, at least for the foreseeable future.
Hmmm. A writer of science fiction at The Register versus every professional association of scientists on the planet.

Tricky One. Can you say 'Category Error'?

Fortunately, anyone wanting an analysis from a guy with a PhD in Physics from MIT can try here

So much misinformation, so little time.

The actual figure for German PV production is 300% more than stated above. The German feed-in tariff project has been a startling success. German policy was always to reduce FITs on PV as global PV costs became cheaper. Which they have done. Germany's intervention in the global PV market has been instrumental in increasing the grid PV market by a componded 60% a year for a decade, decreasing global prices, stimulating technology, and Germany is now a world leader in this tech, which is gonna be key this century. Vielen Danke.

Germany is now a world leader in manufacturing PV: in 2008, a German company became the largest PV producer in the world. Germany has one other company in the world top ten. They’re both joined in the top ten by First Solar, an American company with manufacturing plant in Germany. So, a world-class industrial base there, with worldwide demand currently rising: last year the global market was roughly €28bn, and is expected to double over the next 5 years, and to continue to grow over the next 20 years.

Well that would be impressive if it wasnt all riding on the back of massive subsidies.
Lets be frank, the solar industry can not stand on its own two feet. I heartily wish it was not so, but we have to have honesty in this debate.

my figures above came from a green source by the way. I do hate it when you guys start arguing amongst yourselves

                    Global economic growth: 3.8%.
                    Global population growth: 1.2%.

And the bigger threat would be .... ?
