Practically perfect in every way....there's a time and (more importantly) a place for malarkey.

SY - one way to do it would be to get the house (and gardens, surrounding area) highlighted a bit on the site and advertise it in TNT or the Gumtree to backpackers or the more upmarket Aussie/Saffa types who want a break with BYOB and a barbie of a weekend. £50 a head and you'll get a whole party of them in there. Better than nothing for the time-being.
Maybe get in touch with one of the (many) tour companies doing this kind of thing with facilitated activities and offer them a 'cut down' rate on the place just to keep it afloat while he gets a proper business plan sorted.
Better still if your mate can facilitate business relationships with activity centres (kayakking, climbing, whatever) nearby for reciprocal business/referrals. A long-shot but it might just work. Time for him to hit the phone and sort out longer-term ideas.Comment

Longer term maybe something similar to this which is just down the road. Business focussed B&B, conference facilities with food etc.
Shorter term maybe he can have a word with his MP, Gideon Osborne, who seems to be able to put the screw on the bankers to help small businessmen (ho hum).Guy Fawkes - "The last man to enter Parliament with honourable intentions."Comment

I was thinking he could start a clay pigeon shooting centre, or archery club, if there's room. But the lease may have conditions that prevent certain activities (and a brace of decent shotguns, or even bows and arrows, don't come cheap)Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment
