It is moral guidance that teaches children to become better adults in most cases. Where there is no guidance, where there are morals you are left with the feral proles that grow up to stab and rape each other in the worse sink estates in the UK? I don't think a religion can be credited with inventing it. Either it's from God, or man invented it... if there's no God religions are just bunches of people.

I think I disagree - people are by nature self (or tribe, and therefore self) interested. The idea of doing good for others outside of your self interest would not have spontaneously developed without religion.

To say "just bunches of people" is to dismiss the idea of a bunch of people working together as worthless which I don't think is correct at all.

Humans have empathy its an evolved emotion that lets us to see ourselves in others shoes, this is missing in is people who are sociopaths etc.

I think you'll find that it is not an innate emotion. I think you will find it's nurture over nature. That concept of nurture comes from a set of common goals & boundries that in turn form religous doctrine.

Simple kindnesses like someone giving a stranger a drink of water or some food, or tending to their wounds, are the essence of charity. People seem to do this naturally so I think "organised charity" is a natural progression for any society which has spare resources.
