Now that "you´ve got away with it" I think it will cost the store more to put it right in their accounting systems than the amount they lost. All the goods are barcoded so if they can´t trace it they won´t be able to book it.

I think I forgot to pay for my grocery shopping today and it didn't dawn on me until I got home when I reached to fetch my unused credit card from my back pocket. So I replayed the shopping event, specifically the concluding part of the operation, a serve yourself till, packing, doing last items - blank on paying or catching the till receipt before it hits the floor (a highlight) or checking that my 2 for £3 were correctly conjoined - repacking into my sports bag, being careful to first take out the document that I didn't want crumpled, and finally leaving without a care in the world. All these are clear save that one thing. Searching reveals I've not got a receipt either.

Oops.

There is nothing stopping you going back and paying for stuff you've inadvertently forgotten to pay for.

Surely if you'd scanned all your items on the till and packed them in your bag then the transaction would remain open on that till until it was paid for.

The next customer to use it would have been asked to cough up the cash for your dinner before scanning their own items. Surely one of the 'helpful' people who clear the "approval needed" messages would have been made aware of this and reported your theft to the duty manager.

I've just phoned them up and spoke first to the manager and then to another duty manager. Neither knew of anything, but said they will phone me back on Tuesday if they are down. The last one said "to be honest if you got away with it it doesn't matter", but I gave my details anyway.

I didn't exactly make a quick getaway either, because once I've filled their orange bags (and have usually paid), I exit the till area and move on to the chairs in the aisle area to transfer the contents into my own bag. I don't do this in one bag operation for reasons discussed before. It was at a busy time too, and this did was factored into my probability of not having paid computation, but nevertheless I do not remember paying.

I think everyone's done it at some time. Once left a petrol station without paying but realised at the next roundabout and went back. Just as well I did as they had notified the police. Makes you wonder how many shoplifters really are as innocent as they say they are.

Sounds tough to know what you owe, unless you actually have a receipt of any kind? Can't really go round recreating your trolley.

If you feel bad, give the same amount to charity. Easy to know if you paid though, check your card online.
