Think you make a good point notallthere, there is a romantic idealism surrounding traditional societies that frequently ignores the many downsides.

Being a psycho who does not give a tulip about my fellow man one way or another I really can't be arsed to check the former nature of Tibetan society.(Although the film Seven Years In Tibet has them concerned about nice little worms which I thoroughly approve of and anything Hollywood says must be true after all).

However, as a nationalist, someone who believes that people of ANY nation should have the right to shape their own society as they see fit, I still would support the Tibetans despite knowing bugger all about their society. They were invaded by a foreign power who had no respect for their traditions. Even if those traditions had involved sacrificing children (plenty more where those come from) I would still support them.

Well actually I thought that was my point
Whilst I deplore any country that invades another for imperialistic purposes, I think romanticising an inferior culture does it no favours.
And yes, not all cultures are equal - a fact that is lost on the modern Western generation who think that our wealth is somehow a given, and not the product of a culture that is rational and scientific.
Whether that makes it superior is a philosophical question that I am not qualified to discuss.

Fing is, since the chinkies invaded, there are more of them than tibetans. So, the tibetans are in minority. The majority no longer support their views. Though even when the Tibetans were in the majority, anyone who spoke out was killed.

This is a very timely petition indeed. On the BBC news tonight there are very disturbing images of rioting and violence in Tibet. The BBC news in China is being censored and there is no mention whatsoever of the riots on Chinese TV.

I heard about the rioting on Radio 2 this afternoon.

I got home at 16.00pm and read the news for 5 minutes. Blah blah blah "rioting in Tibet or some such place".

I have a raid in World of Warcraft to organise in 10 minutes, so alas, this is a bit "secondhand hand news" and I don't have the time to give it my full consideration. I've got 24 other people needing my intervention in SSC. Yeah I'm sure the Tibatians need some support....here...there ya go...ra ra ra and shake my tambourine....,,good luck to you.

I also hear the chinkies are gunning for them as well. Hmm. Rar Rar Rar the chinese...oh bllx..I missed a raid....that's the problem with "Causes", they can be damned inconvenient at times...I'd like to support you both but warcraft calls.....

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Done. Even though you hate me.

You've come right out the other side of the forest of irony and ended up in the desert of wrong.

Crikey, all we need now is for China to invade South Korea (elections imminent, with favourites to win committed to more independence I think) and the Yanks to go barging into Iran (Centcom OC, Admiral William Fallon, who opposed military action in Iran resigned last week) ...
