I wouldn't work in a place that did this, neither would anyone decent. They value key stroke monkeys over highly skilled productive people and that's what they'll get.

I think it would depend on how the device works. If it plugs into a USB port (emulating a mouse/keyboard) then it could be identified based on the hardware ID.

There are others which are more like mini-treadmills, i.e. the mouse gets physically moved around (or held still while the surface moves underneath it), and I think they'd be harder to detect. Ditto if you went for the Homer Simpson approach with a drinking bird tapping the Shift key.

It doesn't say much about a job if the only way of telling if someone's on the job is by monitoring their keyboard/mouse activity.
