The world’s first confirmed dog-fox hybrid was found in the Brazilian wilderness.
In 2021, the animal, a female, was hit by a car and taken to a veterinary hospital for treatment.
The staff at the hospital were unable to determine whether the animal was a dog or a fox, as it had physical characteristics of both species.
Genetic testing revealed that the animal had 76 chromosomes, a combination of the 74 chromosomes of a fox and the 78 chromosomes of a dog. This confirmed that the animal was a hybrid.
A recently published study revealed the animal’s mother was a pampas fox and her father a domestic dog of an unknown breed. Experts believe it’s the first recorded instance of an offspring from a fox and dog breeding.
The animal looked like a medium-sized dog with large, pointy ears, a long snout and a jet-black nose. It also had brown eyes and a black-brown coat with specks of white and grey.
