As an ex-PM or party leader as long as he hasn't pissed his party and/or parliament off then a year or more after he stands down as an MP he gets asked if he wants to be elevated to the House of Lords anyway.

Which is why it probably won't happen. I doubt Boris has the numbers, despite what his supporters say. There will be some attempt at a face saving exit before Monday, "for the good of the country, I'm supporting Sunak" etc. etc.
